Luanda hosts the 7th African Union – European Union Summit: a partnership in search of progress and stability

The seventh summit of the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU), which is being held in Luanda, Angola, marks a crucial step in strengthening the historic partnership between two blocs with major geopolitical and economic challenges.

This summit, under the theme “Promoting peace and prosperity through effective multilateralism”, has brought together African and European leaders since Monday in a rapidly changing international context.

Among the delegations present, Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema made the trip to defend the interests of his country and reaffirm Gabon's commitment to balanced cooperation, bringing stability and shared development. Arriving in Luanda on Monday, the Gabonese head of state is actively participating in the work, which continues this Tuesday during high-level sessions.

A summit at a pivotal moment for Africa and Europe

A platform to strengthen ties and address global challenges

For President Oligui Nguema, this meeting is an opportunity for Gabon to strengthen its relations with the European Union, particularly in the areas of trade, security and sustainable development. Cooperation between Africa and Europe, with a 25-year history, remains essential, with trade in 2023 reaching 467 billion euros, or 306,332 billion CFA francs, according to Brussels.

Beyond bilateral discussions, the leaders present will also address burning topics: migration management, the exploitation of strategic minerals, but also the continuation of international efforts to end the war in Ukraine. On the sidelines of the summit, officials will continue to discuss, particularly in the wake of the recent G20 summit in South Africa, to strengthen global coordination in the face of security and economic challenges.

A summit symbol of a common will
This meeting in Luanda also celebrates an anniversary: that of 25 years of relations between the African Union and the European Union. A partnership which, despite its differences, remains the main lever of commercial cooperation for Africa, with trade which reached close to the figures announced above in 2023.

More than just a diplomatic forum, this summit embodies the desire of the two continents to build a more stable, prosperous and inclusive future together, in a constantly evolving international context. The challenge is great, but the stakes are just as great: to make this alliance a pillar for peace and sustainable development in Africa and Europe.
