AU SUMMIT 2026: BURUNDI TAKES THE REINS FOR A BLUE AND PEACEFUL AFRICA

The 39th ordinary session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) opened this Saturday, February 14, 2026 in Addis Ababa. The summit is being held in the presence of around fifty leaders from the continent, as well as the Secretary General of the United Nations, testifying to the importance of current issues.

The passing of the baton!

The major event of this day is the transfer of power at the head of the organization. Angolan President João Lourenço, outgoing president, officially passed the torch to his Burundian counterpart, Évariste Ndayishimiye, who will hold the rotating presidency of the Union for the coming year.

Theme 2026: The issue of water
Placed under the sign of the management of natural resources, the year 2026 is devoted to the problem of water. This theme highlights the urgency of guaranteeing access to drinking water, managing cross-border conflicts linked to water resources and responding to the challenges of climate change.

Heading towards Agenda 2063

This summit recalls the continent's commitment to Agenda 2063. This strategic framework aims to transform Africa, by the centenary of the creation of the OAU (1963-2063), into a prosperous, integrated continent and above all, totally free from armed conflicts.
