Eiffage Génie Civil launches work on the new quay at the port of Matadi
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, work on the future quay of the port of Matadi has reached a decisive stage. The Eiffage Génie Civil Marine teams installed the first pile of the new container terminal, marking the operational start of a strategic project won in January 2025.
Located on the Congo River, the port of Matadi constitutes a vital infrastructure for trade in the country and the province of Kongo Central. The current expansion aims to significantly strengthen its logistics capabilities.
A major project in a complex environment
For this first phase, the teams used techniques adapted to the particularly hard and heterogeneous nature of the soil. Down-the-hole hammer drilling and the Symmetrix process made it possible to precisely install the first foundation elements of the future quay.
The contract, awarded by Matadi Corridor Terminalaux à Conteneurs and supervised by Ingérop, includes several major components:
The construction of a new quay on piles 347 meters long and 30 meters wide
The construction of three 20 meter wide access walkways crossing the existing quay
The construction of an operations building and a workshop
The rehabilitation of 7 hectares of logistics platform
The installation of a dedicated concrete plant directly on site
One of the central challenges of the project lies in maintaining the existing quay in activity throughout the duration of the work. This operational constraint requires rigorous planning and permanent coordination between technical teams and port operators.
A strategic lever for the economic development of Congo
Beyond its technical dimension, the project is part of a logic of regional economic development. The extension of the container terminal should make it possible to improve the fluidity of trade, increase the processing capacity of goods and strengthen the logistical attractiveness of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Aware of the local impact of the project, Eiffage Génie Civil is committed to employing more than 90% local labor. This commitment aims to promote the transfer of skills and training in the field, thus contributing to sustainably structuring know-how in the region.
Located in a constrained geographical environment, on the banks of the Congo River, the site illustrates the capacity of large French groups to intervene on complex international port projects. For Eiffage, this operation strengthens its positioning in strategic maritime and river infrastructure in Africa.
With the installation of the first pile, the project is now entering its concrete phase. The next steps will focus on the gradual elevation of structures and the development of new logistics infrastructures, intended to sustainably transform Matadi's port capacity.
