China announces tariff-free access to African products and calls for a multipolar world

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced that China will apply a zero-tariff regime on 100% of African products subject to import taxes from May 1, 2026, as part of strengthening Sino-African relations.

Speaking at a press conference held on March 8, 2026 in Beijing, on the sidelines of the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress, Wang Yi highlighted that the current year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Africa, as well as the Year of China-Africa Human and Cultural Exchanges.
According to him, this measure aims to increase trade and provide more opportunities to African economies through access to the vast Chinese market. He also announced the organization of around 600 cultural and human activities between China and African countries in order to strengthen ties between people.

The head of Chinese diplomacy affirmed that Sino-African relations will continue to strengthen in the political, economic and cultural fields, specifying that several African leaders will be welcomed to China during the year to deepen the strategic partnership and promote the construction of a “China-Africa community with a shared future”.
Beyond Africa, Wang Yi addressed several international issues, emphasizing that China supports strengthening the role of countries of the Global South in global governance. He recalled that these countries now represent more than 40% of the world economy, calling for a more balanced international system based on multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations.

Regarding the Middle East, he called for an immediate ceasefire and a halt to military operations in the region, saying the use of force is not a lasting solution. Beijing pleads for the resolution of crises through political dialogue and respect for state sovereignty.
On the Palestinian issue, the Chinese minister reaffirmed that the two-state solution remains the only just and lasting outcome, calling on the international community to support the reconstruction of Gaza and guarantee the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

Wang Yi also discussed relations between China and the United States, saying that cooperation and mutual respect are the only viable path for the two powers. He indicated that high-level exchanges should continue in 2026 in order to stabilize the bilateral relationship and avoid any confrontation.

The minister also underlined the solidity of the strategic partnership between China and Russia, which according to him is based on equality, mutual respect and coordination on major international issues, in the context of the evolution towards a multipolar world.
On the economic front, Wang Yi reaffirmed China's opposition to protectionism and its commitment to more inclusive globalization. He recalled that the Chinese economy has contributed about 30% of global growth in recent years, saying the country will continue to support international trade and the stability of supply chains.

The press conference, which lasted approximately one hour and 20 minutes, covered a wide range of issues relating to China's foreign policy and its growing role in international affairs.
