Côte d’Ivoire–Senegal: 250 billion CFA francs in trade, a figure deemed insufficient

Despite long-standing diplomatic relations and economies that are among the largest in West Africa, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal are still struggling to realise their full trade potential. Their trade, valued at 250 billion CFA francs in total, remains below expectations. During a visit to Abidjan on 19 October 2026, the Senegalese Prime Minister called for economic cooperation that is more focused on investment.

Trade between Abidjan and Dakar still has significant room for growth. This observation was made by the Senegalese Prime Minister, Ahmadou Alhaminou Mohamed Lo, during his goodwill and working visit to Côte d’Ivoire. With cumulative trade standing at 250 billion CFA francs, he believes that the economic results do not yet reflect the ambitions expressed by the two countries. In particular, the Senegalese government would like to see Ivorian and Senegalese companies increase their joint investments. The focus is on financing infrastructure projects that are likely to contribute to the implementation of national development programmes.

Dakar also intends to open up its market further to Ivorian businesses. The Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s willingness to support investors keen to participate in the projects set out in the Senegal 2050 National Transformation Agenda. Discussions also focused on the future of West African cooperation. Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire intend to continue their collaboration within ECOWAS, particularly in the implementation of regional integration projects and the preservation of the bloc’s achievements.
On the sporting front, Dakar is preparing to host the Youth Olympic Games, scheduled for 31 October to 13 November 2026. The Senegalese Prime Minister called on Ivorian institutions and young people to lend their support to ensure the success of this event.
